MY FUNNY VALENTINE

As many of you know, when your baby girl grows into a 13-year-old, her view of her world life becomes a roller coaster ride.  As moms, we’re no longer quite sure about what’s in their heads;  we gather our patience and courage, and hope our attempts at communication pay off in the long run.

So I wasn’t all that surprised to hear my daughter announce that I should not give her anything for Valentine’s Day. It’s tradition to give her a little something and her favorite milk chocolate truffles.

Instead, she would rather me help her make the individual Chocolate Raspberry Heart Cakes from my Small-Batch Baking for Chocolate Lovers cookbook for her two best friends.

I’m not one to turn down the opportunity to bake with my daughter;  after all, she might change her mind again.  So we jumped into the project — albeit a couple of weeks early, but we called it practice.

As it happened, they turned out so beautifully that I decided to share them on a recent WBIR segment representing the Old Mill.  A group of Cub Scouts watched in the studio, longingly eyeing the chocolate, so they shared one of the cakes when my 3 short minutes were over.

I still wonder how my little chameleon decided to trade in her treasured trinkets for a cooking lesson to surprise her friends. Nuggets like these go a long way to increasing my faith and trust in her teenage process.  And working and chatting in the kitchen is something I’ll do more often.
